Archdeacon Hawkins is visiting New Plymouth. . Mr. ('. MaeDiarmid returned to Auckland last night.' after a visit to New Plymouth. On Saturday night Mr. I. W. Openshaw. of Lepperton. accompanied by his wife and familv left by the Rarawa last night for Oneliunga eii route to Tamanga. where he has purchased a farm and intends to reside. Following on a recent amendment of the Land Act providing that no person carrying on business as a land agent shall be eligible as a member of a land board. Mr. J. McCluggage yesterday handed in his resignation to the Taranaki Land Board, which was accepted with regret. A Gisborne telegram says that Mistress J. G. Eraser, an old and respected resident of Poverty Bay, died yesterday. She went to Gisborne over 40 years ago, and took a prominent part in defending Tolago Bay when Te, Kooti descended on that settlement, and is indeed regarded as one of the heroines of the raids. Colonel Porter, in his book, says that Mrs. Eraser did Spartan duty, arming herself with a gun and doing everything possible to instil a spirit of courageous defence into (he defenders until relief arrived. A well-known Maori, Here Te Hokowhitu. died in a private bospital on Friday evening, from typhoid, says the Wanganui Chronicle. It appears that he had been treated according to Maori custom, and medical aid had not been sought until too late. He was a member of the Ngatiruaka (Wanganui River), the Ngatituherctoa (Tatipo), the Ngatiwhiti. and the Ngatitama (Moawhango and inland Patea) tribes. He was a supporter of the Maori Land Boards. There will be a big tangi at either Ranana or Hiraharama.
The many friends of Mr. Dugald McKellar, only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. McKellar, of Now Plvmouth, will regret extremely to hear of'his death which'occurred at his parents' residence on Monday night. The deceased was only 34 of age, and had been farming in the Uruti district for some time past. It was only a few months ago that he married a daughter of Mr. R. McKenzie, of Uruti. Although he had been in illhealth for some time past, the late Mr. McKellar had lately shown signs of improvement, and his'untimely death came with painful suddenness.
The new Rhodes scholar, who is a *on of Mr. ,| am ,. s Miles, manager of the Tinnk of Australasia, [nvercargill, is twenty years of age. He was educated at the Boys' High School in that town. He gained a junior university scholarship in 1008, and took his B.A. degree last year at Otago University, being in residence at Knox College. His record this year is: Advanced Mathematics, first class*<>mor English first class, first in honors Knglish first class, first in the class- senior English first class, first in the class' •Tames Clark prize. On the social side he is vice-presid-nf- of the Students' Association, president. ~f the Arts Faculty, editor of the Otago University "Review, and was the representative of' the Arts' Faculty in the Tiiter-Faeultv debate, 1012 hi athletics he represented his school a~t cricket, football, and shooting, and was fives champion in 1908. He has also been in the Otago University representative teams for football, tennis, and hockey and was a member of the officers training corps in 1010.
