In a football match the Australians de- ! fcatcd the University of Southern California by 41 points to nil. NEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION. THE LAWS OF TilE GAME. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In response to a requisition signed on behalf of the Canterbury, South Canterbury and Otago unions, a special general meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Football Council was held to-night to discuss several resolutions regarding the game. Mr. G. F. C. Campbell (vice-presi-dent) presided over an attendance of over thirty delegates. Considerable discussion followed upon the following resolution from Canterbury: "That the Now 'Zealand Rugby Football Union be requested to instruct the secretary to jmake an. immediate application to the English Rugby Union for authority't'o I make such alterations and amendments to the rules of the game as may from time to time be found necessary to or advisable in the interests of the game in this Dominion." Prior to the mover, Mr. G. IT. Mason (Canterbury) being called upon to reply to the arguments adduced for and against the proposition, the chairman pointed out iliat the resolution was completely at variance with the constitution. and it appeared to him that, if carried, the executive could not act upon it. The motion was lost by 34 to 28 (the delegates voting by centres). After this several resolutions on the order paper respecting the laws of the game standing in the name of Canterbury, were dropped by the delegates from that union, whereupon Mr. F. G. Olsen (Auckland) moved several, of which the following were carried—Kn'ocking-on and throwing forward: That, provision be - made so tha.t a player may recover a knock-on by catching the ball before it reaches the ground. Kick-off: That, clause R of rule 11 be altered to read, "Not in a scrummage, crosses an imaginary line drawn through the back rank of his own side, of the scrummage and parallel with the'goal line." Line-out play: That in line-out play the advantage rule be strictly applied. These resolutions are to be'sent to the New Zealand Union: executive, with a suggestion that the latter should forward them to England for the consideration of the English Rugby Union. It was decided that the New Zealand Union should pay the expenses of one delegate from each union.
