BOWLING.
«. WEST END SEASON OPENED. The unpropitious weather did not deter a fairly large number of bowling enthusiasts from foregathering on the West End Club's green yesterday afternoon on the occasion of the opening of the club's season. The rain held off for the greater part of the afternoon, enabling a friendly match, President's v. Vice-President's teams, to be played. In declaring tie season open, Mr. J. D. Sole apologised for the absence of the president (Mr. F. J. Hill), and read a telegram from him, wishing the club a successful opening day, and promising to donate a gold medal for the championship singles. He also read a congratulatory wire from another well-wisher (Mr. Bigelow), who, remarked Mr. Sole, apparently still took an interest in the welfare of the club. (Applause.) Mr. Sole expressed pleasure at the presence of so many friends that afternoon, remarking that it was evident that the kindly feeling exhibited towards the club at its formation was still in existence. Since last year a good- many improvements had been made to the property, and he hoped that next year would see still further new departures. He hoped that members' wives, would not make their'visit to the green merely an annual picnic, but would make it a weekly affair. A winter green had been laid down, which, it was anticipated, would be available for play next; winter. At the invitation of Mr. Sole, Mrs. Corncy then formally threw the jack: Mr. Sole then presented Mr.. Norman' Johnson with the trophy donated .by the president for the championship singles. The other prizes won during the year had, he explained, been previously presented. Next year he hoped a]l, the'■ prizes would be presented on the open-, : ing day. On behalf of the Fitzroy Bowlirig.Clup Mr. Healy congratulated their' West End confreres on their third annual opening. Although the youngest cjut? in Taranaki, it hrfd already made a repu- , tation not only' as bowlers but as good sports. He congratulated 'members, on the amount of work they had'- ; put, into their green, remarking, incidentally, that only those who turned to'wft'en the occasion demanded got the full pleasure out of the club. :|o'Afternoon,.tea, .was.handed round by the ladies, who were present in largo 1 numbers, aid contributed materially' to' the success of the' afternooit ■•.'•-;'..•■'■•■■ The match resulted in a win fof-the-', 'Tice-president's' team'toy nine points.' In dealing further with the tournami'iit, it was decided: That entries close on January 10; prizes to be referred to the executive to arrange; that the donor (a member of the New Plymouth Club) of second prize be thanked for his offer, the third prize to be allocated to the rink that has the least number of points scored against it. The secretary was instructed to notify the several clubs of the decision of delegates. The action in opening a bank account was approved. A vote of thanks was passed to those who designed and arranged for the supply of banners. The matter of increasing the yearly subscription was deferred until the annu-il meeting. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the meeting.
