HIGH SCHOOL v. NEW PLYMOUTH. The weather was not ideal for this match, showers hindering the start of play for about twenty minutes, and afterwards a cold wind .blew across the ground. Weston, the New Plymouth skipper won the toss and put High School in. Moves and Monteath opened to Nicoll and Simpson. Moyes hit a three off .Nicoll's first ball, but Simpson's first ball, a beauty, beat him. One for 3. Colson followed and slow play was the order of the day, Nicoll gave way to Williams, and the latter bowled Colson in his first over. Two for 14. Ryder followed, and a good stand was made. Ryder played freely, and Colvile and Lash had a try with the ball, Nicoll going on again in place of Williams. With the score at 44 Ryder was caught by Legg off Nicoll, and the rest of the innings was a procession. Simpson, who went on bowling again later in the innings, captured two more wickets and wound up with the good average of 3 for 3; Nicoll's figures were 5 for 7. New Plymouth started batting with Williams and Colvile, Moyes and Little bowling. Colvile succumbed to a shooter in the first over. Nicoll followed, but soon lost Williams, who played round a good one from Moyes. Two for 10. Lash joined Nicoll, and a good stand was made, both ran well between the wickets, and soon 40 was on the board; Lash then played Ryder on. Gwillim joined Nicoll, who was playing more freely. The fourth wicket fell at 50, when Nicoll .gave an easy catch to Ward which was missed, next hall he played into Colson's hands. Gwillim played freely but rather luckily, and he and Robson were the only ones to make runs. Moyes bowled very well, and Ryder got a fair average. Appended are the scores:— HIGH SCHOOL.—Ist Innings.
