TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Canterbury Metropolitan meeting will be continued at Ricearton to-day, the principal events being the Derby Stakes and Metropolitan Handicap. Derby Day at Ricearton is always a popular one, and this year's race for the New Zealand blue ribbon promises to be a liotly-contested one. Sir Ceo. Clifford won the coveted honor last year with Masterpiece, Counterfeit being third and Ormojul's Miscount dividing the Chokebore pair. Sir George has Autumnus and Brown Owl to battle for him today, the former showing better form in recent long gallops. The Yaldhurst candidates promise to prove redoubtable opponents, and on Wanganui form Bon Reve should be very hard to beat. Bon Ton and Ilaskayne are high-class three-year-olds, and may run well. Bon Reve and Autumnus are expected to run most prominently. Following are the final payments and weights to be carried in the New Zealand Derby Stakes, of 1350 sovs., one mile and a half: Autumnus 8.10, Boil Reve 8.10, Bon Toil 3.10, Canute 8.10, Carolus 8.10, Gnome 8.10, GoldCup 8.10, Ilaskayne 8.10, Obligant 8.10, Vocation 8.10, Anna Carlovna-8.5, Brown Owl 8.5.
Last year the New Zealand Cup winner, Tice-Admiral, followed up his success by landing the Metropolitan Handicap with 8.11 in the saddle. Domino was runner-up with 8.1, and Labor Day 7.10 third.
The Auckland Racing Club spring meeting opens at Ellerslie on Wednesday. Acceptances are fair, and the lact that Bleriot, Prince Soult, Our King and Monorail have been paid up for ensures a great race in the Great Northern Guineas.
