CRICKET.

season opexi:d. Saturday saw the opening of the North Tuntnaki Cricket Association's season under the most favourable auspices. Tin' weather was perfect and the wickets fair. Considering the earliness in the season, fairly good cricket was witnessed.

LAW V. NEW PLYMOUTH.

Some surprise was caused on the Recreation Ground, where Law went under to New Plymouth to the tune of 44 runs. Batting first-, New Plymouth compiled 148 runs in two hours. Arden and Mason first entered the lists, the former having the hard luck to be l.b.w. in his his first over. Mason, however, outlasted the bulk of hie side, and by dint of careful batting scored 75 runs as the result of about an hour and a half's play. The balance of the runs were distributed fairly evenly amongst the remainder of the team, only, however, after numerous chances had been missed. Besides Mason, two others, Williams (15) and Harding (ll not out) ran into double figures. The bowling lacked I spirit, Lash alone putting vim into his work. Law continued to bat at about 20 minutes to five, and were all out for 104 .by a quarter to six. They certainly had hard luck in two such able rungetters as Lash (5) and Bewley (15) being run out, quite apart from the fact that Greatbatch. threw his wicket away to a catch from an easy ball. Lash and Bewley opened, the former early retiring. He was succeeded by Greatbatch, who made the pace exceedingly hot while he lasted, knocking up 31 runs in about ten minutes. He hit three sixes, two in succession, and also netted a four. Lawrey batted steadily, and thirteen runs stood to his credit when he was dismisscd'by Holden. H. B. Reid contributed a good innings. In all he made 18 runs, and his tally included two fours. The Bewley-Greatbatch partnership—short as it was—was easily tlie most successful combination, securing 40 runs.. Well on in the -innings H. B. Reid and H. Johnston made a Stand, their partnership producing 27 runs. figures:— NEW PLYMOUTH.—] st Innings. N. Ardern, 1.b.w., c. £Uio,tt .... 2 Ei Slasoij, c. find b! Lash 75 Sheppard, b.
