MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE.

THE ROSEBY CASE.

By Cable—Press Association—Copyright.

Brisbane, November 1

At the enquiry into the disappearance of a man named Roseby, who disappeared from the steamer Wodonga between Townsville and Bowen, the steward gave evidence that the boatswain told him that he had been informed by a fireman that he saw a man jump overboard. Witness told the Chief Officer. The latter gave evidence that he saw the boatswain, who said that the fireman had made a statement. Witness did not think it necessary to report the statement to the captain. The boatswain gave evidence that he saw a man, who he thought was Roseby. The latter was not intoxicated, but seemed unwell. The fireman remarked to witness: "I saw a man go overboard." They were drinking whisky on the forecastle head. They had a row. A brother of deceased gave evidence that deceased was an absolute teetotaller.

The Magistrate commented on the happy-go-lucky state of affairs. A man disappeared, and nobody troubled to discover anything about the matter.
