SIGNED ARTICLES.

AUSTRALIAN LEGISLATION.

By Cable—Press Association —Copyright.

Melbourne

November 1

A deputation representing seven hundred provincial newspapers in the Commonwealth waited on Mr. Thomas to protest against the Electoral Act as applied to newspapers. They objected to the vagueness of its wording and the excessive fines in connection with publishing, advertising, or representations of ballot papers likely to mislead, or incorrect statements likely to interfere with an election. They strongly protested against signed articles and reports, which requirements hit the country press bard, since the correspondents of those journals would refuse to sign their names.

Mr. Thomas promised to lay the representations as to excessive fines before the Ministry.

Mr. Thomas was personally strongly in favor of signed articles.
