THE GOVERNOR.

A VISIT TO ELTHAM. By Telegraph—Press Association. Eltham, Last Night. Lord Islington visited Eltham to-day. He arrived by special train at 3.30, and was welcomed at the station by the Hon. Mr. Carncross, the Mayor (Mr. T. B. Crump) and others. A large crowd was present. The Governor then protected with the chairman of the local bodies to various factories, on a tour of inspection of the Egmont Box Factory, Eltham Dairy Factory, and the new curing-room of the latter, where he formally laid the foundation stone. In the course of a long address at this ceremony, Lord Islington said that the dairy industry was the most important in the world, particularly in Taranaki and the Dominion as a whole. He congratulated the frrmers of Taranaki on their advanced ideas in connection with this industry, particularly co-operation, which was indeed an important thing in any industry. Co-operation should be applied, not only as it had been been in the past, but in the case of imports, and would be found very beneficial in every way. Means of communication were needed badly, and he would advise light lines, such as he had himself seen in other countries. He also advised the use of manures, particularly basic slag. The money spent on fertilisers was well spent. They had good markets—a great one at Home and a growing one in Canada. He congratulated them, on their factories, and expressed great pleasure to be present to open one. Later in the afternoon, after spending a couple of hours in the town, the Governor departed for Wellington.
