WORK AND WAGES.

THE LAKE COLERIDGE STRIKE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night.. Advice received in Christchurch to-day from Lake Coleridge states that the dispute between the tunnel contractor (J. McWilliams) and his men has been settled and the strike declared off. Mr. A. Paterson, secretary of the General Laborers' Union, informed a reporter that enquiry proved all the men's allegations right up to the hilt, and practically all the men's demands had been conceded by Mr. McWilliams. The, demands conceded were:^ —Wages, lis per shift, en-gine-drivers 10s 6d, surfacemen 10s, the engine-driver dismissed to be reinstated, all workmen to be paid time and a half for overtime on holidays and doubletime for Sunday work, ladders to be immediately placed in the shafts, all employees out on strike to be reinstated, bathrooms and change-rooms to be immediately finished, and the contractor to recognise the Lake Coleridge branch of the Canterbury Laborers' Union in all matters where disputes arose. The union abandoned their demands for the dismissal of the carpenters who refused to strike. The contractor is sending them away to another part of the works, where they will not be amongst the other men at all.
