Hayes, one of the three miners injured by falling timber in the Woodstock mine shaft yesterday, has practically recovered, but the condition of the other two, Johnston and White, is serious. ■ ■- ■ ■•- ' A SHUNTING FATALITY. _— *. Wellington, Saturday. At the inquest at Petone on the body of Thomas Osborne Cook, who was killed through a shunting engine and cars bumping into a car under which he was working, the evidence was that the usual danger flags provided by regulation were not displayed at each end of the car, and tluit it was deceased's duty to see that they were displayed. Deceased, who leaves a wife and child of eight, is described as a very steady man. A verdict of accidental death was returned. ,

POUND DROWNED. Christchurch, Last Night. ■Shortly after 5 o'clock this evening two - small boys who were on No. 4 wharf at Lyttelton noticed what appeared to be a body floating in the water. They called two men, who went down and found it to be the body of a man. They sent for the police, and the body was taken to the morgue. It was in a state of advanced decomposition, and was unrecognisable. In the coat pockets was found a membership book of the Federated Seamen's Union of Australasia, with.the name James Murdoch, and the date of enrolment January 11, 1012. There was also a copy of the Liverpool Weekly Mercury. It is stated that a man named James Murdoch, who deserted from the steamer Kent some months ago, has been missing for some time.
