THEFT OF BOOTS.
.STEAMER PILFERING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At the Magistrate's Court to-dav, before Mr. W. Or. Riddell, S.M., Pcrcival Monk, James Hart and William Welch, all employed on the Corinthie. were each charged with the theft of 14 pairs of boots during the voyage. At various times after the vessel left Capetown, Monk and Welch sold boots to members of the crew. The -former told a detective that lie got them from a steward, who deserted at Capetown. Welch said that the loots found in his possession were given him 'by a passenger who left at Capetown, and Hart's evidence was practically the same. The Magistrate said that' lie did not believe the explanations and convicted the accused. Each was ordered to forfeit £2 Bfi from wages coming due. Hart and Monk were sentenced to one-month's imprisonment each, and Welch (who signed off the articles at Wellington) was sentenced to three mouths' imprisonment.
