QUEENSLAND MYSTERY.

A HORRIRLE CRIME. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright, Brisbane. September 21.

A girl named Birch, aged fifteen, had been living with John Woods and family for nine years at Oakey. William Birch recently came to Oakey and claimed her as his daughter. The family and girl refused the claim, and the girl disappeared, but returned next morning. It is alleged that Birch waylaid her and threatened to shoot her unless she accompanied him. Terrified, she consented to go to a place, where a large heap of sticks was gathered. She was compelled to remove, most of her clothes, and Birch shockingly illtreated her. After he had threatened to roast her on the fire, she ultimately escaped. The police found the ashes of the fire, containing charred remains, and part of a rifle. A doctor pronounced the rema'ns to be those of a human male.
