UNIVERSITY EDUCATION.
.'"UNSATISFACTORY FINANCES. 'By T^egraph—Own Correspomd**t. . : ', " ' Wellington, Last Night. The 1 unsatisfactory condition of .the finances of Victoria College .was., put beftjrtj'' the Ministers of. Education . and Finance by a. deputation to-day/ The chairman of the College Council said the College had arrived at the. stage that it'could'not be efficient with its present income. Unless they had a guarantee 'from''the Government it, would be necessary, ibefore long, seriously to contemplate giving notice''to some of the professors and lecturers. The Minister, said- he knew the difficulties of Victoria College were greater than those of anv ;other-' in New Zealand. Auckland was pretty bad, and the others were not | what "they ought to be in regard fo ifin'ance. He understood the report being prepared by Mr. Hogben would throw .some' light on the whole situation. He .was quite willing to recommend the G-o----ivernment to do something to help Victoria College. The Government would lhave to insist that specialisation was : more ademiately defined at the four colileges, and that each should take up : some particular kind of work. The fees .charged at Canterbury and Otago were double those charged at Victoria Colfege, land he thought it was time that itherc was some uniformity. He was, he said, in conclusion, persuaded that the Amount spent on university education ■was not what it ought to be.
