ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
DEATH OF A CHILD. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Tuesday. At the inquest on the infant found in a milk pan at Henderson, the jury found that death was due to exposure, consequent on neglect by its mother, a single woman named Rose Herd, who has been arrested and charged with manslaughter. CRUSHED BY A TREE. Woodville, Last Night. A settler named Hooper, living at Wharetai. met with a frightful accident this afternoon. He was assisting Beagley, a neighbor, in bush-felling, when a large tree came down on him, pinning him on the ground. Before assistance came he was unconscious. It took some time to lift the tree and then he was carried to Mr. J. IT. Escott's house, on Wharetai. The messenger who came into Woodville for a doctor said that he feared both Hooper's legs were broken and that he was badly crushed internally. A doctor has gone to the assistance of the unfortunate man.
