The head of a large island trading company says that unless efforts are made in Australia in time, America will secure much of the Island trade when the Panama Canal opens. THE RATE WAR. Receeived 24, 12.35 a.m. New York, August 23. Financial circles, discussing the Panama Canal legislation, say that it is seriously affecting railroad stocks. Pacifice underwent considerable liquidations. Washington State officials prediet that the rate war is involving the maritime nations of the world. As a result of the Panama Canal Bill, the Suez Canal may lower its rates to attract trade.
