The Bill for raising "the salaries of members of the Assembly by £2OO proposes an additional £250 yearly for the Leader of the Opposition. THE FEDERAL HOUSE. Melbourne. August 17. The. Eederal Government has declared against the Slate-assisted immigration of Maltese. The Senate rejected an amendment inserted by the House in the Defence Amending Bill, providing that the pecuniary penalty be deemed a debt to the Commonwealth, recoverable in a civil court. Senators objected to the Commonwealth having the power to garnishee the wages of defaulting cadets-. The House discussed the Senate's action, and the debate was adjourned.
