SENSATIONAL ACCIDENT.
A PLUCKY RESCUE. By Telegraph-Press Aviation. . . J Wairoa, Friday. An instance of bravery on the part of a county roadman has just been made known since the recovery of his mate, who is now in the Wairoa Hpspital On tlie 7Mi inst, two men, Daniel Murphy and Timothy Hirlihy, were engaged in widening a cutting on the Waikari inland road, when a slip, comprising fifty yards of earth and boulders, swept Murphy down nearlv three hundred feet into the Waiknri river. Hirlihy, who was working above his mate, jumped from the cutting and, skidding down the whole distance, and landing eight yards out in the river, which was fairly flooded at the. time, rescued Murphy m a state of unconsciousness. He carried him out and then collapsed. Murphy was taken to the hospital suffering from a broken jaw, severe bruise* and shock, an/1 is now recovering.
