Mr. Hilles, chairman of the Republican National Committee, forecasts the Presidential campaign. In fifty-four States an electoral vote* of 385 will vote for the Republicans, against ten States with lit votes favoring the Democrats. Four States are doubtful. No State is in accord with the Rooseveltians. WILSON'S CAMPAIGN. Received 17, 12.30 a.m. Washington, August 10. Woodrow Wilson ha& opened his Presidential campaign in New Jersey. He attacked the Republican tariff-making methods, and pointed out the benefits of a mercantile marine from the Panama Canal. He did not refer to the Canal tolls dispute, and the omission is regarded assignificant. Mr. Eugene Wilder Chafin. who has been nominated for the Presidency in the interests of Prohibition, has for'mnny ycars been one of the leading advocates of t!» cause in the United States.' Hi' was oorn at Troy, Wisconsin, in 1852. lie was admitted to the Bar in 1875, and was in practice at Waukesha from 1870 to 1900. and at Chicago, from 1901 to 1904. He is an active speaker and organiser in temperance and prohibition movements, and was Grand Chief Templar of the Wisconsin Good Templars from ISBO to 1890, and of the Illinois Good Templars from 1894 to 1895. lie was the Prohibition candidate for Wisconsin for Congress in 1882 and for Chicago in 1902. He was candidate for the At-torney-Generalship of Wisconsin in 1886 and 1900, for the Governorship of.Wisconsin in 1898, for the Attorney-General-ship of Illinois in 1904, and for the Presidency of the United States in 1908.
