In a judgment summons case, the defendant, H. Eva, who made no appearance, .was ordered to pay the sum of £25 14s 2d to P. Willis forthwith, or in default undergo one month's imprisonment, the order to be suspended so long as the amount is paid by instalments of £1 every four weks.

Finality was reached in protracted litigation at the 'Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. A. Crooke, S.M.. when Wm. iSnell, of Dannevirke, sued George Omary Hill, of Koru, for £35 15s, claim for rent of a whare at os per week. Mr. A. R. Standish appeared for the plaintiff, while the defendants were represented bv Mr. A. 11. Johnstone. The claim has already been the basis of several civil actions. Hill and his wife, occupied the whare, which was a sawmill at one time owned by J. Patterson. The property passed into other hands, eventually coming iijto the possession of the plaintiff, as mortgagor. Snell claimed rent from October 14, 1!)0!). till present date. The Deputy Official Assignee first claimed the rent from Hill, who was subsequently sued by Mrs. Patterson, 'but the action was discontinued. Snell then brought on the present action. Hill admitted that he would have to pay the rent, but to precisely whom he pleaded he did not know. ,Hc was being called upon to defend first one action and then another. The .Magistrate gave judgment for payment by Hill of 4s per week from February 17, IMO, but dismissed the action against his wife, with £1 Is costs against the plaintiff. The amount of the judgment is £25, and costs £5 14s od. At the instance of Mr. Johnstone, the plaintiff undertook to indemnify TTill against any claim for rent which might be made by the Deputy Official Assignee, or Mrs. Patterson.

Chases reminiscent of the bushranging days occurred at Belata, between Narrator i and Mores, in New South Wales, last week. Mounted-constable Anderson went out to find a man who is alleged to hare stolen a horse. He came upon a mounted man, whom he questioned, and then took in charge. Constable and prisoner rode side by side for a few miles, when suddenly the prisoner wheeled his horse round and made off. The trooper gave chase, but the other, who was mounted on an old racehorse, gained ground. Fearing that the prisoner might escape, the constable called twice on him to stop, but the order was not heeded. The constable fired his revolver into the air, but as this had.no effect he fired again, and the bullet struek the man in the am. However, the man rode on, but when lie attempted to jump a 14ft creek he lost control of the horse, and horse and rider came down in the creek. Disengaging himself, the man clambered out and ran away. The troper dismounted, and, after a.chase of a couplo of hundred yards, caught his j man again.
