Madam* Melba leaves Melbourne today for London by the mail steamer Otranto. ' ' ' The death is reported of Mrs. J. L. Beck, mother of the gifted boy musician Haiyden Beck. The Right Hon. James Bryce, British Ambas.sad.or to the United States, is at present or* a tour of the inland districts of New South Wales. A New York cablegram announces the sudden death from pneumonia, at the ago of 85 years, of .John W. Herron, father of the wife of President Taft. A Gaaettc notice states that Captain William Morrison, of the Queen Alex-" anclra's '2nd (Wellington West Caost) Mounted Rifles, is transferred to the reserve of officers. The presentation made by the directors of the Dominion to the editor, Air. C. W. Earle, in appreciation of his services during the past six wars, consisted of a cheque- for £350, together with cases of .jewellery to the vnilw of £IOO for Mrs. Marie. According to an Ettlyim gentleman, the following are freely rumoured as intending candidates for the Egmont byelection : —Messrs. Duncan Scott (Opposition), Frank Farrdl (Labor). C. A. Wilkinson, and B. Dive (Government), and J. F. M/os-sman (Independent). ~
