The award of the joint Conciliation Board appointed to enquire into the Newcastle colliery trouble, particularly the miners' demand for the abolition of the afternoon shift, while refusing to abolish this shift, recognises that the men's claims are worthy of special consideration. The award embodies a revised scale of wages, wheelers and surfacemen carrying an increase of Is to Is Gd a day. Eigiit shillings a dav is fixed as the minimum rate to any ciass of colliery laborer*.
