Bryce had resigned the A'ubassadorsnip at Washington, and said he was returning there at the beginning of September. THE DEFENCE COMMITTEE. London, August 1. The Prime Minister presided at an important meeting of the Imperial Defence Committee. The Canadian Ministers were among those present. THE SUGAR CONVENTION. London, August 1. In the House of Commons Mr. Buxton announced that Britain was withdrawing from the Sugar Convention. UNIONISTS INDIGNANT. Received 2. 11.30 p.m. London, August 2. The Unionists protested against the Suddenness of the announcement of the withdrawal from the Sugar Convention. Mr. Asquitb consented to give a day to discuss the situation. The Morning Post says that the one point whereon members of tooth sides of the House, in the lobbies, are agreed, is that the Manchester election is closely connected with the Government's decision. The Unionists, while deploring that decision, emphasised that the withdrawal would enable a tariff reform Government to give preference to the West Indies. THE NE TEMERE DECREE. Received 2. 10.40 p.m. London. August 2. It the House of Commons. Mr. Asquith. in reply to a question arising out of the Privr Council's decision in the ne case in Canada, said that the difficulties attending the suggestion of a uniform marriage law were applicable to the whole Empire. They were so great that he feared he would be unable to institute enquiries with a view to gaining the adhesion of the self-govern-, tag Dominions thereto. ' THE APPROPRIATION BILL. Received 2. 0.55 p.m. London. August 2. Tn the House of Commons the Appropriation Bill was read a second time.
