STRIKE IN BRITAIN.
PROPOSED NATIONAL STRIKE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London, July 26. A strike picketer was sentenced to a year's imprisonment for assaulting a non-unionist. The transporters at Hull have promised the London strikers monetary assistance. They favor a national strike if all ports are consulted and a conference approves. Mr. Havelock Wilson is disappointed, but is visiting other ports. DECLARED OFF. STRIKE COMMITTEE'S MANIFESTO. Received 29, 12.20 a.m. London, July 28. The Strike Committee unanimously has declared the strike at an end and recommended an immediate resumption of work. It has issued « aianifesto declaring that it has strenuously endeavored for ten weeks to promote a settlement by concUiatory action. The men resented the employers' harsh impositions in a manner lifting the dispute to an heroic level. The capitalists' most powerful weapon—starvation—was used remorselessly, but despite this and other sinister methods used by the employers the committee recognise that the men's courage and devotion to trade unionism are working the class into solidarity. Every reasonable means of conciliation was exhausted. The committee determined on its present course rather than accept abject humiliation. The manifesto adds that all agreements prior to the dispute must be maintained entirely. The employers' persistent refusal to settle or act with reason indicated designs upon the Transporters' Federation and various unions, hut the loyalty of the men, shown durint; the tragic struggle, must be maintained at all costs.
