EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Taranaki Education Board met last evening, when there were present the chairman (Mr. 11. Trimble), and Messrs. G. A, Adlam, J. Young, R. Masters, W. Rogers, A. 11. Ilalcombe, W. L. Kennedy, A. Morton, and the Rev. A. M. Bradbury. TECHNICAL ORGANISER'S REPORT. In his report, the technical organiser (,Mr. F. J. Ileatley) stated that the projected change of drill night for cadets would probably affect next session favorably, though too late for this. The St. John Ambulance, through Mrs. Dockrill (the secretary), had availed itself of the offer of a class-room at the college to hold a nursing class, recognised as a continuation class. Students joining this class would not only obtain the nursing certificate after examination, but would qualify for the college certificate. There were some 40 students taking the course. The day classes, industrial, domestic and commercial continued to be attended regularly, the numbers keeping on the up grade. If they continued to keep up further accommodation would he necessary. As the result of a concert promoted chiefly through the good offices of Mr. Gilmour, the college had benefited to the extent of nearly £lO, which with the subsidy thereon would enable the college to obtain an up-to-date typewriter and other necessaries for students in the commercial courses. In response to requests for an evening class in millinery, a class was in course of formation, and students had been asked to give in their names before Friday next. A successful class was being run at Waitara. The wood-work, cookery and ambulance classes at Inglewood were being carried on, and millinery and dressmaking classes would be formed a,s soon as the services of an instructress were available. At Stratford centre the country classes formed were continuing for a second term at Tarfki, Midhirst, Cardiff, and probably at Toko and Ngaere. Owing to the state of the weather during the month, very little had been done with regard to outside work in the school gardens. Arrangements are being made to have the necessary seeds for the spring sowing sent out. °

The report was received and a bonus of £lO voted to Mr. Heatlev for extra work done ill connection with the day classes at New Plymouth. TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

Reporting to the board, the chairman (Mr. F. P. Corkill) of the New Plymouth Technical College Advisory Committee, asked that the £2O raised for the benefit of the college by a ladies' committee be expended as follows:—In collecting '.the tubs with the drain, so that a laundry class may be established with as little delay as possible; the purchase of a typewriter; the purchase of the I.C.S. phonographic outfit for the teaching of the Spanish language. The committee was informed that eight students had been awaiting the formation of this class since the end of last year. The report was received. TRUANT INSPECTOR'S REPORT.

The Truant Inspector (Mr. A. Hooker) reported that for the quarter endin" June 30 he had issued fifty final notices regarding irregular attendance of children, and had also visited a number of parents. In the majority of cases he was satisfied that the absences were mostly due to epidemics of mumps, measles, and scarlet fever, which, with the extremely wet weather, had tended to upset the attendances. GENERAL. Mention was made in the chairman's report that the following teachers had been granted permission to change the date of the mid-winter holidays-.—Miss McArthur, Oaonui; Mr. Egglcston Tongaporutu; Mrs. Harrison, ° Pungarehu; Miss Westrup, Korito; Mrs. Cartwright, Pukearuhe; Miss Wylie, UrutiMrs. Birkett, Mangahume. ' ' The matter of installing a temporary stove in the Radnor schoo! was left iii Mr. Masters' hands.
