was dull, but the wicket was fast. Sprot won the toss and Minnett and Emery took up the bowling. Hampshire made a good showing. Bowell succumbed to a full toss after 18 minutes, and Stone was taken by Carkeek standing back. —Two for 40. Thence the score mounted steadily, reaching 50 in 30 minutes and the century in 55 minutes. Fry was at the wickets for 33 minutes. Barrett, the fourth batsman was out, and then Mead, who started when one wicket was down, and Jephson were associated and added 95. Jephson played splendid all round cricket without a fault for au -hour, hitting eleven fours. Mead was brilliant all round the wicket, cutting and driving. The third century went up in 140 minutes. The fielding was excellent. The following are the scores:— HAMPSHIRE.—First Innings. Bowell, lbw, b Emery 15 Stone, c Carkeek, b llinnett 24 Fry, c Carkeek, b Kelleway 24 Barrett, c Smith, b Matthews 5 Jephson, b Whitty 55 Brown, e Kelleway, b Whitty 3 Newman, c and b Emery 18 The Hampshire total was 371 and the Australians had lost three wickets for 47 when stumps were drawn.
