Mr. W. L. Fitzherbert. of Palmerston North, is visiting New Plymouth. Mr. Hogben, Inspector-General of Schools, in company with Mr. Gill, Inspector of secondary schools, officially visited the Now Plymouth High School this week.
Mr. Coker is revisiting New Plymouth, where he was stationmaster 25 years ago: Mr. Coker, who is accompanied by Mrs. Coker, is now stationed at Palmerston.
A Sydney cablegram states that the Hon. Maurice Baring, fourth son of Lord Revelstoke, the well-known diplomatist and war correspondent, is a passenger for New Zealand by the Osterlcy on a health trip. The following resignations of teachers have been accepted by the Taranaki Education Board J. Carmichael, teacher, Pukeho; Miss Hilda Rice, assistant, Bell Block; Mis,s A. L. Lawrence, pupil-teacher, Stratford. Mr. Wm. Jones (son of Mr. M. Jones, of New Plymouth), who left here some months ago to take up a position with a Christchurch firm of solicitors, is an active member of the Christchurch Catholic Literary and Debating Society. In a recent debate, "Would a Labor Government be in tho best interests of the Dominion?" Mr. W. Jones spoke in the affirmative, and was awarded the highest points of any pf the speakers, the judge paying a special tribute to the speaker's manner and method of delivery.
The death occurred at Masterton on Sunday of Mr. Charles Wilton, one of the earliest settlers in the Wellington province. The late Mr. Wilton was S3 years of age, and arrived in Wellington in the ship Oriental in 1841. He served his apprenticeship in the grocery business with Messrs, Mcßeath and Wallace, of Wellington,, and subsequently carried on business on his own account on Lambton Quay, Wellington. He later embarked in farming, 011 the- Taranaki Plains, after starting a general store at Ruripuni. He leaves a family of ten. fifty grandchildren, and ten great-grand-children.
The following appointments have been made by the Taranaki Education Board: —Miss B. Henderson, assistant at Central school, New Plymouth; Miss C. E. Wvlie, sole teacher, at Uruti; Mr. N. D. Day, assistant teacher at Waitara. Temporary appointments are as follows: Miss A. E. Hamerton, head teacher, Egmont Village; Mrs. Morgan, assistant, Stratford; Miss M. I!.
