ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
A PATHETIC TESTIMONY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Gore, Last Night. At the inquest on Saturday on the body of a man found in the Domain, he was identified as Hugh Beattie. He had Jived for the past three years on the Nokomai goldfields, and was known aa Hugh Ward. It is assumed that this this was his uncle's surname. Medical evidence flisclosed that the main artery and the muscles inside the left elbow were completely severed, death resulting from hemorrhage. A verdict of death from hemorrhage from a wound self-in-flicted while mentally depressed was returned. The following unsigned message scratched on a tin tobacco box was found on the body of the deceased: '•Masterman—l leave you the claim. Nothing to live for. I think rotten inside. I am done. Am a liar all my life. Mrs. Selwod can bury me if she and Peter like my will. Love when we meet. Died mad about 5 p.m., Saturday, for the best. Look well; you can dissect my body or bury me. Thanks." A TRAM CONDUCTOR INJURED. Wellington, Last Night. A serious accident befel a tram conductor named Frederick Hancock this afternoon. Hancock was standing on the top of a double-decker running along Featherston street. He was changing the destination board on the side of the car when his head came into contact with one of the iron standards which support the overhead wires, and he was seriously injured. He was removed to the hospital in an unconscious condition. Hancock, who is a married man with three children, living in Tasman street, sustained a fracture of the skull. Later. Frederick Hancock, the tram conductor who was injured while altering a destination board this afternoon, died in the hospital to-night.
CHINAMAN SUICIDES. Dunedin, Last Night. Wong Sue, a Chinese fruiterer in Stafford street, was found hanging dead at the back of his shop this afternoon. The discovery was made at 3.30, but the body was not cut down, and the police were not informed till about 5 o'clock. It is stated that deceased had been gambling heavily lately, A COUGHING FIT. Auckland, Mondav. Eliza Bryan, aged 70, died at Newton after a severe coughing fit. DROWNING FATALITY. Waimate, Monday. A sad drowning accident occurred ijl the Wailiao .river on Sunday. Three young men, Kirkcaldy, Duncan, and Evans, owners of a motor launch, went out, but the engine stopped. A strong current carried the launch towards the outlet. Two of the occupants jumped out to swim ashore, but were carried out to sea and drowned. Adams re? mained in the boat and caught the outlet box when passing and drew himself ashore. Kirkcaldy's body was recovered. The launch was washed to sea. THE LAST RESORT. Dunedin, Monday. Mary Hayward, whose husband works up country, hanged herself at her home' at Green Island this morning.
