STRIKE IN BRITAIN.
OWNERS OBDURATE. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. London, July 17. Lord Devonport, chairman of the Port of London Authority, did not attend the conference with Mr. Asquith, but Mr. J. O'Grady, M.P., and others merely saw the Premier on private business. The owners will not acquiesce in the intervention of any third party. There are 95,000 men directly and indirectly idle through the dock strike. A million and a quarter has been lost in wages and £200,000 expended in strike pay, while 25.000 families are destitute. The police boarded a train conveying lion-unionists to Tilbury, and confiscated fifteen revolvers. A DEADLOCK. Received 18, 11.45 p.m. London, July 18. Lord Devonport informed Messrs. Gosling and Orbcll that the employers would only assent to resumption on the following conditions: All classes forthwith to resume without stipulating any conditions, relying on the assurances of the employers that they would consider any grievance submitted by the men or the representatives of a particular union. The Strike Committee rejected this, and has issued a statement declaring that the ultimatum adds insult to injury and is a direct challenge to trade unionism. The committee is prepared to advocate immediate resumption on the conditions obtaining prior to the dispute.
