THE GAMBLING CIRCULAR. By Telegraph—Press Association. Blenheim, Friday. The local branch of the Post and Telegraph Association passed the following resolution: That this branch protests strongly against the Postmaster-General forwarding a gambling circular, and that the association use its influence to have it withdrawn. Dunedin, Friday. The local branch of 'the Post and Telegraph Officers' Association unanimously resolved to record an emphatic and indignant protest against the action of tihe Department in issuing the circular re gambling, as being quite -uncalled for. The meeting strongly resented the terms of the circular, deeming it to be an interference with the liberty of the subject. A TOHUNGA FINED. Whangarei, Friday. A Maori named Retete te Poi was fined £ls for practising tohungaism. Evidence was given that accused took into the bush a girl of 17 years who was suffering from a minor complaint. He continuously poured cold water over her bare body, and it is alleged the girl died as a result of the treatment. EDUCATION COMMISSION. Dunedin, Friday. The Education Commission has decided to ask the Minister for a month's extension of time. Mr. White, principal of the Training College, favored compulsory continuation classes, hut the instruction therein might he restricted to one class of study, and in lieu of a course of physical training should be made compulsory. ALLEGED WIFE DESERTION. Wanganui, Friday. In the Police Court, George Smithies, formerly engineer and town clerk at Wanganui, was charged with having deserted his wife some six years back. He was arrested at Sydney' and remanded till Monday. , : , (,! <■
