WORK AND WAGES
REEFTON STRIKE. THE MEN DETERMINED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Reefton, Friday. The Hon. Mr. Colvin arrived last night, and met with a good reception. The Miners' Union held a meeting last night, at which 250 were present. Keen disappointment was expressed at the correspondence from the department. The meeting was of opinion that the agreement had been literally torn up. It was resolved that the union retain Mr. P. J. O'Regan to oppose the application by the Consolidated Goldfields Company and the Blackwater Company. It was decided that lock-out pay be on the scale of 30s for married men, with 2s 6d for each child up to four in number, with a maximum of 2, single men £1 per week, to be paid about next Tuesday, all locked out members to report to the union office once a week. A resolution was also carried that all single men without dependents be asked to seek work elsewhere. The position is regarded as very serious by the union, and the men expressed the determination not to work the machines single-handed. Reefton, Last Night. There are no further developments in the Reefton trouble. The Hon. Mr. Colvin visited the road works at the Progress Company's mine with the councillors.
A REBUFF TO THE FEDERATION. Wellington, Friday. A deputation from the Federation of Labor waited upon the Wellington Trades Council last night and asked for co-operation from the latter body in assisting the Waihi and Reefton strikers. The council was unable to see its way to comply with the request. It is understood that the feeling of the «ouncil was more favorable to the Reefton men than to those at Waihi.
