FIRES.
AN OLD HOUSE BURNED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Taihape, Thursday. By a fire last evening a house in the outskirts of the town was totally destroyed with its contents. The property, which was very old, was owned by J. Jensen and occupied by a widow named Strong, with seven children, and a boarder named Randle, with his wife and two children. Mesdames Strong and Randle were on the way to a social when the outbreak occurred, and the children only were at home. The eldest, 1(5 years of age, assisted by Kloth, a neighbor, rescued the other children. The flames quickly consumed the building and only a few small articles were saved. The fire is attributed to a defective chimney. The house was insured for £3OO in the New Zealand Office. The contents were uninsured, and the occupiers lost all.
