A STABBING AFFRAY
RESULT OF A DRINKING BOUT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The Herald's Opotiki correspondent telegraphed as a sequel to the stabbing affray at Pahatoa pa near Tekaha, on Wednesday last week, Tamehana Wirepa was charged at the Police Court with murdering Haraana Wirepa, and with stabbing Tuhi Taare Wirepa and William Newland with a knife. Tuhi Taare, who was- severely wounded in the affray, was the first witness, and gave evidence concerning the affray. William Newland, a bush contractor, said that he took six ordinary bottles of whisky with him from Tekaha to Pahatoa, arriving there about 10 a.m., on June 5. He and the others concerned in the fray were drinking from the time of his arrival until four o'clock in the afternoon, and consumed four bottles of whisky. At 4 o'clock he left for Tekaha for more whisky, returning about dark with six more bottles. He arid the others finished one bottle, and might have tasted another. Several other witnesses gave evidence. Tamehana Wirepa was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, and left in custody for Auckland this afternoon.
