COST OF LIVING
COMMISSION IN CHRISTCHURCH. By Telegraph—Press Association. Cliristchurch, Monday. The Cost of Living Commission opened its Ch(istchiirch sittings this morning. Mr. W. Bowater, timber merchant, said that in past years a rougher class of timber had been used than to-day. There was now better classification. He did not know of any ring in the business. Wages had increased 15 or 20 per cent., timber was getting further from railroads, and these facts, \vitll the improvements in public taste, accounted for the increase in prices. Mr. F. Brittain gave evidence re Tepake, where the trades had a monopoly. The cost of transit was heavy, the roads were neglected, and people apathetic. Thousands of acres were unproductive. Mr. H. Bishop, land agent, said the increase of population and prosperity had caused substantial increase in land values near Cliristchurch. No system of rating could stop the rise in values.
