Kidd (not out 7) and Calthorpe faced Emery and Whitty. The bowling was j deadly, and on such a wicket the rot threatened to continue. Kidd, without adding to the score, was caught off Emery's third ball. Then Holloway and Calthorpe played vigorously, and kept up a plucky partnership for 25 minutes. The bowlers were handicapped by their inability to secure a foothold. Fifty went up in 75 minutes. Hazlitt replaced Whitty at 58, and his fourth ball was | fatal to Calthorpe, who was applauded ') for his game display. He hit five fours, I and the partnership put on 41. Franklin j assisted to take the score to 75, and was then bowled. Grierson, the last man, was tempted by Hazlitt and was caught iat long-on. Holloway played capital cricket and was unbeaten. ) Rain then came on, and during luncheon became continuous, so stumps were drawn. The scores were:— AUSTRALIA.
Bowling analysis.—Whitty, three for 28; Emery, four for 32; Hazlitt three for 16. MATCHES ABANDONED. Received 9, 5.5 p.m. London, June 8. Heavy rain submerged the wickets and both the Australian and South African matches were abandoned. Playing against Worcestershire Spooner scored 127.
