ENGLISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. By Cable—Prase Association—Copyright. London, June 7. In the final of the amateur golf championship Mr. John 'Ball beat Mr. Abe Mitchell at the thirty-eighth hole. A PARTISAN FIGHT. Received 0, 5.5 p.m. London, June 8. Amongst the crowd who witnessed the golf final were many artisans, who cheered Mitchell, who is a chauffeur. The papers comment adversely on the introduction of a partisan element. The Times says that the crowd was venomous and unsportsmanlike. The Daily News say 3 that the aristocratic spectators did not conceal their resentment at a workman playing in the final. Both players were most sportsmanlike in their friendly relations. Mixed foursomes were played on Saturday for a prize presented by Mr. Standish. There was a record entry of 56 players. The game was, unfortunately, considerably spoilt by the exceptionally bad weather—severe westerly squalls with heavy rain.
