GOLF.
ENGLISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. By Cable—Prase Association—Copyright. London, June 7. In the final of the amateur golf championship Mr. John 'Ball beat Mr. Abe Mitchell at the thirty-eighth hole. A PARTISAN FIGHT. Received 0, 5.5 p.m. London, June 8. Amongst the crowd who witnessed the golf final were many artisans, who cheered Mitchell, who is a chauffeur. The papers comment adversely on the introduction of a partisan element. The Times says that the crowd was venomous and unsportsmanlike. The Daily News say 3 that the aristocratic spectators did not conceal their resentment at a workman playing in the final. Both players were most sportsmanlike in their friendly relations. NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB.
Mixed foursomes were played on Saturday for a prize presented by Mr. Standish. There was a record entry of 56 players. The game was, unfortunately, considerably spoilt by the exceptionally bad weather—severe westerly squalls with heavy rain. The winning score by Miss Blundell and Bayley, 95—12—83, was good under the circumstances. The following are the six best cards. Miss Blundell and Bayley 95 12 83 Miss Simpson and Hansen 95 10 85 Miss Govett and A. Bewley 101 16 85 Miss Brewster and Johns 91 5 86 Miss MacDiarmid and Nicoll 108 20 88 Miss Percy-Smith and W. C.
