GENERAL NEWS

Still they come! Mr. Chas. Martin,> representing a well-known wholesale' hardware house, is following the example of some of his brother C.T.'s, and will make Stratford his headquarters. Another pro6f of the suitability of Stratford for the Opunake railway junction as a big commercial centre. The Licensing Committee yesteruay morning renewed all the licenses in the district, and granted transfers where applied for. The witnesses before the Railway Commission here have received a type-writ-ten copy of their evidence for their perusal, correction and signature. Some of them are surprised that they talked bo.' much. The average speaker will fill a newspaper column in ten or twelve minutes. The reporter has to deal with him generally in five or six lines, or even, perhaps, by saying he "also spoke." Memoirs of an eventful night at Whangamomona were received yesterday morning, when Mr. W. 6. Kendick, S.M., chairman of the Licensing Committee, said he had been told by a .member of the committee who had had the misfortune on one occasion to stay a nigfat at the Whanga. Hotel, that the ■bar was open more or less all night. They might have been hoarders who were supplied, but there was an immense amount of drunkenness. The bedroom doors were being kicked open by people who were trying to get in. He left *t four o'clock, when the bar was chock-a-block jwith men, many of them drunk" Mi. Kenrick said this was a shocking thing. He had been told, however, by another member who knew the hotel well that the occasion was unique, and that the premises were now excellently conducted. The incident was therefore | passed over. Moral: Don't let the Licensing Committee members stay in your hotel on "unique" occasions, such as on the night of a Ministerial banquet in "pay" week. |. Stratford heat Skinner Road cribbage players, a dozen-a-side, at Mr. Paytori's rooms on Thursday night by 37 to 33. i Mr. H. 11. (lollop has sold his black- | smith's business to Messrs. Davies and Walker. Mr. Davis is well knoivn in this district as a smith. Any member who regularly attends local bodies' meetings can fairly well vouch for the political opinions of thd bulk of the members. Tlv>re are many, of them who never miss ir: opportunity] of getting in a jibe at the lovernment, i and in several cases this failing serns to ! have become chronic. It is questionable j whether it is right for a member of a ! road board or a county council or a hospital board to allow the board's dealings with the Government departments to be colored or affected by the members own views on general politics. Messrs. 11. 11. Young and Co. are now preparing their exhibit for the Hawera Show. Some of the turnips grown from their seeds are magnificent specimens, a striking proof of the fertility and germinating power of the seeds sold. Last year the linn's exhibit was secured by a Government expert, who included it in the Department of Agriculture's exhibit at a big South Island show, saying he had never seen finer turnips, and that they would serve to remove the southerners' impression that Taranaki could not grow root crops. ■ Mr. C. Downey, secretary of the Stratford Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Society, was among the exhibitors at the New Plymouth Poultry Show, and secured 00 entries for the Stratford Show to be held next month.
