LICENSING COMMITTEES

EGMONT. The annual meeting of the Egmont Licensing Committee was held at the Magistrate's Court, Elthani, on Wednesday, at noon. Present: Mr. Kenrick, S.M. (in the chair), and Messrs. A. Christie, L. Hill, A. H. Guy, W. C. Dudley, and L. Strack. Applications for transfers were granted in the following cases: From W. Moon to G. W. Tayler (Central Hotel, Eltham), and the issue of a license to G. W. Tayler; from W. Bellvue (Waimate Hotel, Manaia) to J. Russell. The issue of a license to J. Russell was adjourned till June 2G, pending the requirements of the Bench with regard to fire escapes being complied with. Applications for renewals by J. D. Bashford and G. D. Mackenzie (Manaia) were adjourned to the 2fith for the same reason. Applications for renewals were granted in the case of the Opunake Hotel, Okaiawa Hotel -(Mr. Ryan), Coronation Hotel (Mr. Weir), and Middleton's Hotel, Opunake (Mr. Bennett). In reference to the application of Mr. Potts for the Coronation Hotel, Eltham, the chairman said that lie had a complaint from a travelling company as to their not being supplied with meals when they wanted them, and also as to their not being treated civilly. He could only say that he could take no notice of such complaints unless they were supported by evidence. There was no evidence in this case, and the Bench could, therefore, take no notice of the complaint. The applications of Mrs. Cramp (Eltham Hotel), W. D. Emeny (Rahotu Hotel), and C. L. Kasper (liaponga Hotel) were adjourned till June 26, pending fire escapes being erected. The application of Messrs. Blennerlinssett and Sons (Mr. McVeagh) for a wholesale license was adjourned until Jun 26, to allow of the application being made in the name of A. W. Blennerhassett. In several .cases before the Egmont Licensing Committee counsel for licensees asked that the license be granted on the assurance that certain works would be carried out. The chairman of the Bench said that the law would not allow the Bench to do this. They had no power to grant licensees subject to the issue, and the cases would have to be adjourned till the requirements were fulfilled.
