OTAGO WINTER SHOW

A SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The twentieth winter show of the Otago A. <fc P. Society was officially opened this afternoon by the Prime Ifiaister. Last year's record entry of 1134 exhibits »has been eclipsed by no fewer than 300, in spite of the fact that many entries had to be refused for lack of space. Exhibits are forward from all parts of Otago, and from as far north as Canterbury, while in the butter sections a number of North Island firms are 1 competing. The sheep forward are considered 'to be the very finest type of. animal yet seen at these shows, but the . judging of them will not be commenced till to-morrow. The town has been crowded with country visitors for soma days past, and many are finding consul* < ■ - erable difficulty in securing accommodation. Despite the extremely rough and? t wintry weather the attendance was welji, up to that of last year. The show i» • generally considered to be the most sue-, cessful the Society has yet held, both in 1 J the number and the quality of the exhibits.

In the course of a speech the Prime ' Minister said that the year that closed 1 at the end of December showed lessened ! exports from the Dominion, whilst the f imports had somewhat increased, tl»# » figures being: Exports £19,035,000, im- | ports £19,550,000. This disclosed an ex* 1 cess of imports over exports of about £50,000, and the fact had led some alarm* ists to view with anxiety New Zealand's position. But if they took the Dominion imports and exports for the past three years there was a balance in their favor of £8,004,000, and if they took period* ' of twelve years there was no lesi than ' £61,600,000 of exports over importf. This difference would pay interest charges for that term.
