NAUTICAL ENQUIRY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. The enquiry into the accident to the steamer liaupiri on May 16 on the voyage from Wellington to Picton commenced to-day., Captain Morrison, in his evidence, stated that at the time of the accident rain came down like a blanket, obscuring everything and cutting out every light. This lasted unitil after ihe steamer struck Barrett's reef at the mouth of Wellington Harbor. The mishap was due to the temporary sudden darkness. Sad he stopped the vessel he would have endangered her, cither through blocking the channel and risking a collision with another boat or through running on to the rocks. The court found that Captain Morri3ya had committed an error of judgment in not anchoring the vessel when he found all the lights were obscured by heavy rain squalls, and it was impossible to fix his exact position. The court commended Captain Morrison for the way in which he handled 'the ship after the accident. The court ordered hiin to pay the costs of the enquiry.
