PECULIARITIES OF EXPLOSIVES

SUPREME COURT DISCUSSION. Auckland, Monday. The peculiarities of various explosives were briefly discussed at the civil sittings of the Supremo Court to-day. A witness, who had several years' experience with gelignite, stated'that the explosive struck upwards in the same manner as blasting powder, while dynamite struck downwards. Mr. Reed queried the correctness of the assertion that gelignite exploded upwards, and to clinch his argument, said that .sacks were often placed over the charge, just to keep a few stray stones from flying about. The witness refused to vary his statement, and Mr. Reed remarked that at a later stage he might call evidence to prove that the explosive worked its destruction chiefly below the surface of the roadway.
