ENTERTAINMENTS
WESTOWN HALL CONCERT. The committee of the Westown Hall intend, at an early date, to hold a collar;, 1...u ua-.-o in aid of the hall funds, and with this end in view are making arrangements for a first-class programme. Already a number of the best local amateurs have promised to take part, and patrons can rely on an enjoyable evening's entertainment at the moderate price of Is for admission to the concert, and an extra sixpence for the dance, for which Mis. George's orchestra has been engaged. B.OSINA BUCKMAN. The public of New Plymouth will be delighted to learn that Miss Buckman's concert will take place at the Theatrt Royal on Wednesday next, May 29. Those who heard her last remarked upon the exceptional quality of her voice, which came as a pleasing relation. She showed herself a star performer. Melba's opinion was put to the test, and she triumphed. Professor Marshall Hall, composer of the .latest opera "Stella," writes to Miss Buckman thus: "I must tell you how delighted I was with the power and simplicity with which you carried out your difficult role yesterday. You have made a great hit, due to the earnestness and sincerity which permeated every moment of your performance. I am told you held your audience so completely that you could have heard a pin drop in the theatre. Herr Seharfe tells me he was fascinated right down to the filial chords. It was all so natural and unaffected. Just as I originally conceived it, but I little hoped to ever see it realised." Miss Buckman will be assisted by Mr. Larson, the eminent baritone, Miss Wliitaker and others. The box plan is now opened at Collier's. Prices are 3s, 2s, and Is. JUMBLE FAIR. The Good Templar Hall was transformed into a market place yesterday for the purpose of housing a jumble fair, under the auspices of the Women'* Christian Temperance Union. The fair was opened in the afternoon by the Rev. F. Hales, and bargaining proceeded well into the evening. There was an attractive array of stalls, which were presided over as follows:—Jumble stall, Mesdames Douglas. Lewis, N. T. Maunder, Kibby. W. Griffiths, and Francis; sweets stall. Mesdames Rand and G. H. White and the Misses Rand; pot plants and produce stall, Mrs. Brash and assistants; refreshments, Mesdames F. W. Okey, T. G. Sole. H. T. .Toll and Cathro. The takings came up to expectations, although by reason of the wide and big range of goods it was worthy of better patronage. During the evening, Mr. Gibb gave a number of entertaining pianoforte selections, and the prize for the "grandmother's portrait album" competition was won by Mrs. A. Moore, who guessed the complete number of characters on the list.
