FIRES.
DISASTROUS FIRE IX PAHIATUA. By Telegraph—Press Association. Pahiatua, Last Night. A disastrous fire occurred in Pahiatua early this morning, whereby the twostoreyed premises owned and occupied by Messrs. J. W. Sturton & Co., general storekeepers, were totally destroyed. The building was the largest of its kind in Pahiatua, and was a fine commodious structure. A valuable stock was carried. The building was insured in the Liverpool, London and Globe Office for £I6OO, and the fixtures in the same office for £4OO. Risks on the stock were also held in the same ollice and in the South British. Tin; amount held by the former is £7'2;j. but the amount held by the latter is not available at present. The total loss is estimated at £4OOO.
CONFLAGRATION I\ WELLINGTON. Wellington, Saturday. Three two-storeyed houses in Russell Terrace, near the Newtown tram terminus, were destroyed by fire to-day, and two others were damaged. The houses burned were owned by the Hon. Hamilton Gilmer. The fire was caused by the overturning of a methylated spirit lamp.
