OBITUARY
MR. W. L. REES. By Telegraph—Press Aeeoaiation. Gisborne, Last Night. The death occurred on Saturday of Mr. W. L. Rees, barrister and solicitor, at the age of seventy-six. He was a well-known political figure throughout the Dominion in the seventies and eighties. He was elected to the Provincial Council, and then Sir George Grey becoming Superintendent of the Provinces Mr. Rees became Provincial Solicitor. On the abolition of the provinces in 1876 he successfully contested the Auckland scat. During the Premiership of Sir George Grey he was offered the Attorney-Generalship, but declined it. During 1879 he came to Gisborne, where his headquarters were afterwards fixed. He unsuccessfully contested an election here, and then returned north. He was elected a member for the City of Auejr : land in 1891. Mr. Rees was chairmlin 'of the Native Land Laws Commission, and also held the office of Chairman of Committees. During his life he also made a name for himself in the field of literature.
