SUNDAY PICTURE SHOWS
CHARITY PROJECT DROPPED. Auckland, April 26. Ihe principal moving picture entrepreneurs of Auckland were desirous of increasing the Titanic relief fund by donating the prbceeds of suitable entertainments proposed to be held in the three largest picture halls of the city on Sunday evening after church hours. In view of the necessary sanction having been withheld by the City Council, however proposal has fallen through. Yesterday, (lie .chairman of the Auckland Ministers' Association (the Rev. Cocker) waited on the Mayor (Mr. C. J. Parr) for the purpose of entering a protest against any 'entertainments in the nature 'of picture shows being sanctioned for Sunday evening. He said the principle was regarded as one of vital importance, and that ministers were backed up by public opinion to a very extent in upholding it. ' n The Mayor took the opportunity to refei t-ho matter to the Works Committee, which happened to be meeting yesterday afternoon, and as a result the applications for permission to hold picture entertainments on Sunday evening were declined. Sanction was given for them to take place on Sunday after- j noon. The applicants do not see their way to comply with this condition, however, and the matter is being allowed to I drop.
