AN ESCAPED PRISONER
STILL AT LARGE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The prisoner John Lewis, who escaped from custody while at work in the prison brick yards yesterday, is still at liberty. When he scaled the wall surrounding the yard he was fired on by a warder, but the aim was defective, and Lewis njanaged to get away. It is stated that, tie prisoner dreaded going back to New Plymouth, and that by his conduct since his release by the Prison Board he had prejudiced the chances of . other men who are confined there as ".habituals." It is further .suggested that these men would have visited their displeasure on him, on the grounds that he had prejudiced their chances of liberation. Lewis made his escape with the aid of a plank placed against a corrugated iron wall surrounding the grounds. It ip reported that lie had been seen in Finlay Terrace after he escaped, but so far all efforts to recapture him haw failed. Several policemen and probationers, artillerymen and others are out searching to-day.
