The estimated damage is> £10,720. , A BLAZE AT GREYMOUTH. Greymouth, Last Night. A disastrous fire occurred at Runanga early on Saturday morning, when the Co-operative Company's fine building, together with a large stock, was destroyed, nothing being saved. It is surmised that the fire originated in a chimney near the bakehouse, and it was discovered by a baker. There being no fire appliances, the building had to be let burn. For a time O'Connell's drapery store and Magee's plrivate house seemed certain to go, but willing hands constantly saturated blankets with water and applied them to the buildings. The danger was then averted. Luckily there was no wind, otherwise more damage would have been done. Insurances: On the Co-operative Society's stock, £1450; buildings, £350. The safe of the company came thlrough the fire intact. The books were found to be slightly charred, but it is expected that they will be decipherable.
