EDUCATION BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The Education Board resumed its monthly meeting yesterday morning, the chairman (Mr. H. Trimble) presiding. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The overseer's monthly report read as follows:—Douglas: The new school at Douglas is completed and is now occupied. Waihi: Good progress is being made with the erection of the new school at Waihi. The school is covered in and the foundations completed for the. residence, Pukearuhe: Sites of the new school and residence have been marked out and the material will be on the ground shortty. Awatuna: The repairs to the school residence will be put in hand as soon as the timber is on the ground, Mangorei: He proposed painting and repairing both Mangorei schools as soon as possibe. Repairs were also needed at Lepperton, while at Tuna the teacher's residence was receiving attention. Fitzroy: Before painting, the Fitzroy school needed certain repairs. Puniho: The residence and shelter sln<d have been painted. General: The exceptionally wet weather has retarded several small jobs. At Waihi all hands had to be put on to get the new school covered in. The report was received. The matter of repairs at Fitzroy and the blinds at Lepperton school was referred to the chairman, with power to act. The Board also decided that the application for a porch and a washhouse at the school residence at Fitzroy could not be entertained, as the house was not occupied by the teacher. SCHOLARSHIPS' ENDOWMENT CONFERENCE. Intimation was recr- d from Mr. W Bewley, secretary of -. New Plymouth High School Board, I. he conference to deal with the Tai : ,i Scholarships endowment had been .. .anged for Friday, April 12, at 11 a.m., at the Borough Council Chambers, New Plymouth. ° In connection with the same matter the Wiinganui Education Board notified that it had appointed Messrs Dixon and O'Dea as its representatives at the conference. The Board decided to be represented at the conference by the chairman (Mr H Trimble), Mr. Morton and the Chief Inspector (Mr. W. A. Ballantyne). GENERAL. Messrs Masters and Rogers were ask-' ed to inspect -the Stratford school grounds and to report to the Board on the work that is necessary and the approximate cost.
Permission was granted to the Makahu School Committee to have the platforms in its school made movable, provided it did not call on the Board for anv portion oi the cost and that the overseer was satisfied with the work.
On the motion of Mr. Ilalcomhe. it, was decided to make application to 'the Laud Board for a school' site in Tahora township.
The Board also "osoived to applv to the Department for a grant for a sheltershed for the hoys at the Central School. the secretary (Mr. tf. L. Mcllroy) of the Taranaki branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute wrote thanking the Board for instituting a different method of paying teachers' monthly cheques. The new method, stated the ■ecretary, was highly appreciated, especially by country teachers. Mr. F. A. Wake applied for an allowance on account of the scholarship granted to his. son, who was now at the Wanganui Collegiate School.—The secretary was instructed to reply to Mr. Wake that as he had failed to applv to the Board for permission to transfer the tenure of his son's scholarship to Wmgamii. ami as the Board had no notifieatfon that the lad had taken advantage of his secondary education.- the scholarship had been otherwise dealt with. The sum of £S4 was authorised to be paid to the Public Trustee for the Waihi School site, and it was decided to apply to the Department for the amount. The chairman was authorised to complete the transfer of section 11, Pukearuhe district, from Alfred E. Watkin to the Board.
In reply to the Public Works Department, it was decided to ask the Resident Engineer if it were possible for him to find some place, farther from the school for the erection of a magazine for explosives at Whangamomona. The Tnspector-Ceneral of Schools (Mr. 0. Hogben) intimated that special grants distributed last vear to education boards for training'of teachers in subjects of manual and technical instruction would be renewed for the year ending March 31, 1013. The amount allotted to the Board was £l2O.
