SPORTING.

TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The presence of the locally-trained horses, Goldtn Loop, Master Sylvia, Te Roti, and Simple Sam at the Masterton R.C. autumn meeting which opens to-day vests the gathering with additional interest to Taranaki sports. Golden Loop and Simple Sam have shown recent winning form and their is anticipated here. The Porirua team for Masterton is a particularly heavy one, and includes Aloha, Dirge, Ariatiatia, Royal Marine, St. Felix and Kina. Aloha and St. Felix are reported to be particularly well. A Sydney paper states that Mr Dan O'Brien has decided to give up racing and his horses were disposed of in Sydney recently. For some time past Dan's luck hasn't been worth bragging about, and little wonder will be expressed at the sport's intention to look on at the game in future. Mr O'Brien raced many great horses in his time, but the palm goes to Carbine, whom Dan sold in Australia for 3000 guineas, and thereby lost a fortune. Reported riding engagements in today's Waipupu Cup are: W. Price. Sea Queen; W. Weller, Miscal; A. McMullen, Sir Solo; and C. Emmerson, Golden Loop. Bronze and Undecided are favorites for the Great Autumn, and according to the man in the street, Royal Scotch is a standing order for the Easter. From reliable quarters one hears that Undecided may, not make the trip. General disappointment fills the atmosphere over the fact that Counterfeit has side-stepped Bronze in the ]ong?r handicap, and will race at Ellerslie instead. On paper the Great Northern Oaks looks Counterfeit's all the way, but it strikes this .--eribe that there is more honor in defeating Bronze at Riccarton than in scampering home in front of a parcel of serais up north. Truly honor and glory don't «et much show when golden shekels loom ahead. Tui Cakobau, looking none the worse for a sp;ll of jerking a gig across the landscape, turned up at Ellerslie on Saturday morning, and easilv beat Dinkura and the erratic Bully over a round of the big fences. The Wanganui trainer. A. Neale, left for .Masterton on Monday with Overtime and Rahani. The latter is not much class, but Overtime is expected to run well. Before leaving home he gnlloped seven furlongs in Imin 32sec. and his bold showing amongst the "guns" at Wanganui has gained him many friends. A Napier scribe reports that the veteran -Merriwa and Wooloomooloo—that awful name again!—arc rapidly getting into racing trim, and, will sport silk next month. Consider this well-nigh invincible combination—Trafalgar and jockc''* W. H. Smith. The latter has piloted the champion on sixteen occasions, and the record reads—thirteen firsts, three seconds! The fact that "Tartar" Julian will ride Idealism in th" Brighton Hurdles has caused a boom for the Karamu horse. But. Alas, how many of these "boomers" turn out to lie "bloomers"! Ineuru registered 1.14 when she scored at Wanganui last month, and JTawera sports are wondering if the daughter of Maniapoto will be caught in a galloping mood at Masterton to-day. Frinec Roult, who recently suffered from an attack of warbles, is still on the sick-list, and may not be seen at his best for some considerable time. A Napier writer has worked it out that a sovereign invested on each of Deeley's mounts at the Napier Park meeting would have resulted in a net profit of £lB 17s. The Fordell trainer. F. Tilley, has Gaby, Miscal, Tvororo and Nukuatu engaged at Masterton to-day. One-time smart Auckland Onllnwn-. winner 'of many races amo-i..;vc t ! i« ponies and in V<r company, was found dead in a paddock recently. Somil-'v.ly has "woke rip." After racing ?s Tripo' : for many months the Napier horse will have to get another name. as an Auckland sportsman had a prior claim to the cognomen for a filly by Obligado—Ovrenaiea. Makara is in great heart at present, and will be given a flutter in the Dash Handicap to-dav, despite the load of flst. 81b. The gflding Hoanga. who was taken to the other side some time ago. is engaged in the Great Eastern Steeples at Oakaparinga on Easter Memdav. For beating n f<w moderate performers at Dannevirke Avaunce has caught it hot at Feilding. Devon, winner of the Civil Service Cup at Lucknow. India, b's* ">onth is a NewZealand bred mare b»' So-lt—Gaiety Girl. Mr. G. D. Greenwood will not send Yice-Admiral to Svdnev. 'this sportsman has- purchased Stcan share in the New Zealand Cup winner.
