DEFRAUDING THE DUNEDIN CITY CORPORATION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. Frederick Percy Evans appeared at the Magistrate's Court this afternoon on a charge of having on or about November 20, 1905, committed theft by receiving from W. B. Manley and Co. £lO on terms requiring him to pay the same to the Dunedin City Corporation and fraudulently omitting to pay the same. Accused was remanded till April 1. Mr. McGregor, who appeared for the corporation, intimated that a charge of falsifying amounts of accounts would be laid against the accused this week. He said it was almost impossible to state the amount involved, but it would cer-tainly-run into £IOO. Bail was allowed in accused's own recognisance of £l5O and two sureties of £75 each.
NEW GOVERNMENT OFFICES.. Wellington, Last Night. The Government has accepted the tender of J. W. McMillan and Co. for the erection of new offices in Wellington for the Stamps and Native Departments. The contract price is £19,030. THE MANUFACTURE OF CASEIN. Wellington, Last Night. Mr. J. Pedersene, of the dairy division of the Department of Agriculture, has been appointed to proceed to Europe to inquire into the latest methods of manufacturing casein and otherwise making the most profitable uses of the by-pro-ducts in the dairying industry. He leaves New Zealand in the course of a few days.
THE AUCKLAND MAYORALTY. Auckland, Monday. Mr. Hall Skelton, solicitor, has announced himself as a candidate for the Mayoralty, opposing Mr. C. J. Parr, with the avowed object of endeavoring to heal the breach between the employers and employees in connection with the general laborers' dispute and averting a strike. The Labor leaders propose to ask Mr. Skelton to contest the seat as their accredited representative.
THE STAOPOOLE CASE. Wanganui, Last Night. An echo of the Stagpoolc case was heard at the Board of Education tonight, when a resolution was passed drawing the "Teachers' institute's attention to the action of Mr, Parkinson, secretary of the institute, in obtaining confidential information and then breaking faith. All members of the board paid a tribute to the manner in which Mr. Pirani-conducted the ease for the Board.
